Anytime. He’d be here anytime. I almost wanted to laugh at the situation I had been put into… that we had been put into.
“Looks like it’s just you and me in the end, Angeline,” I said into the empty air that seemed to be freezing cold. I was running my hand gently over the face of a woman who had fallen dead on my lap, closing her eyes. A part of myself urged for some tears to fall from my eyes, but that part was quickly quieted as I tried to stay strong. They were dead, all dead. I was sure that if I closed my eyes I could still see the broken and battered bodies of my teammates littering the ground, how there seemed to be an ever growing pool of crimson blood surrounding their bodies. We lost. We had put everything into this final stand, and for what? Our lives to be taken? I wanted to scream into the air, let my pain echo through the world and land on the ears of all the people I had promised to help. All the people we had promised to help, only to let them down in the end. My fist clenched with what little strength I had left, my fingers digging into my palms as I tried to remind myself that my heart still beat inside my chest, that I was still breathing. But as I looked down at the woman in my lap, I knew that even if I made it out of this with my heart still beating, it didn’t mean I would be alive. I knew that I was dead emotionally. “You really thought that I would let your plan work? What do you take me as? A child?” The booming voice that echoed through the halls sent a shiver down my spine, and maybe if I still cared I would’ve taken off in the other direction. Or maybe if I still had the strength to be angry, I would put up a fight. But I didn’t, I couldn’t. We lost. So how did it all go so wrong? 3 hours earlier: “So you’re saying if we kill this guy the whole city will be better off? Why do we have to make a whole huge fuss and a plan when I could just burn his house down while he’s in it?” I rolled my eyes at Marron’s brutality and overall stupidity. “Do you have any idea just how powerful he is? Your flames would feel like a warm and fuzzy blanket to him,” Ariela huffed from the other side of the room. She was always the one to point out Marron’s stupidity. I found that Ariela was a complex puzzle within herself, switching from gleeful to depressed within a moment’s notice. The only feeling that seemed to stay constant was her feeling of annoyance for Marron Rink. “A warm and fuzzy deadly blanket!” the pyro replied. Her hands caught on fire before transforming the flames into little balls of death and tossing one at the other girl playfully. Ariela mumbled something I couldn't quite catch underneath her breath before flicking her wrist upwards and extinguishing the flame with her own little ball of water. Ariela was a hydrokinetic, that was part of the reason why she and Marron didn’t get along too well. Fire and water never mixed well since they were complete polar opposites. “Will you two stop fighting for just one minute!” the leader, a dwarfish guy named Gillan, stated loudly. Their argument ended automatically. Even though Gil was short for a guy, he was always able to get the attention of everyone in the room, probably because no one wanted to get on his bad side. “She started it.” “I did not!” “You totally did.” “I said quiet!” Gil shouted once again, causing even me to straighten up from where I was leaning against the wall while watching this all unfold. “Take a breath Gil, they're just nervous,” Angeline spoke in her sweet sing-song voice, running her hand up and down his arm to call him. “She's right, we don't mean any harm,” Marron added. The pyro’s voice was quivering ever so slightly out of fear. Taking a deep breath, Gil let himself relax. “Sorry, It's just...this is the only chance we have at making the city free. We have to make it count,” The room fell in silence as we all realized what must be done. What the battle would entail. What sacrifices would be made. I finally spoke up, having been quiet the whole time they had been arguing and conversing, “Well, we better win.” Everything fell apart as soon as we entered the building. Somehow, someone had contacted Voltage and had informed him of our plans. The battle after was brutal. Marron was the first of us to fall, her fire being extinguished when she took a metal spike to the heart for Ariela. It was almost ironic. Ariela died soon after seeking revenge for Marron’s death. All she found was a grave. Gillian died somewhere in between. Honestly, I was so focused on surviving that I didn't know he was dead…. not until I was thrown into his bloody body with its eyes still open. Angeline was the last to fall, having been struck midst the battle trying to heal me. Using the last of my strength I carried her away from the battle, hoping that maybe we could escape. But finally when she drew her final breath and left me alone in this world I knew my time would come soon, And it did come. Cause now he was here. “You really thought that I would let your plan work? What do you take me as? A child?” Voltage’s voice sent a chill through my spine as I turned my head to look up at him. Seeing a darkness in his eyes. “Any last words?” He asked as he walked forwards. His hands sparking with deadly electricity. I took a breath most likely my final, letting my head fall downwards. “Long live the heroes even as we fall,” And soon the world would turn black as waves of pain began to come over me. On the other side of the city in a small apartment, a young boy sat inside of what seemed to be a living room sprawled out on the ground. The apartment was seemingly falling to pieces with the walls left a bland cream color and cracks like spiders webs running along them like almost every other place in the decaying city. The “living room,” which also served to be everything else a family needed within a living space, the little boy was sitting in had a fairly small and broken down couch that seemed to be a tan brown. In front of the couch sat a small box-like TV, which was broadcasting the evening news: “-In other news today, our faithful hero Voltage took down a group of villains planning to overthrow our glorious leader, King Viren. These villains were planning to blo-” “Denzel Turner, what in the world are you watching?” The boy’s frail mother called from the other side of the wall, stirring some type of greyish stew in a cast iron pot. “Some villains were planning to kill the King! But Voltage stopped them!” The little boy responded with excitement. His eyes glittered with a sort of childlike spark. “Thats nice honey,” The mother replied, looking out the dreary window and out onto the broken city, “Like they say-” “Long live the heroes.”
